Home - Shao Lin Ch'uan

Northern Shao Lin Ch'uan is a dynamic, fluid, powerful system of martial arts developed by Buddhist monks in China to cultivate a philosophy of wellness. Time and energy are spent perfecting a centered, tranquil view of life. Strength, flexibility, balance, and endurance are developed through this practice. The basic stances of Shao Lin Chuan are Horse Stance, Cat Stance, Crane Stance, Falling Stance and Bow and Arrow Stance.

Shao Lin Chuan builds strength and self-confidence, and improves health, fitness, self-awareness, concentration and motivation.

The following forms of traditional Shao Lin Chuan are taught at Rubbo Art of Energy:

  • Tan Tui ("Springy Legs"), the foundation of Shao Lin Chuan, ten lines of movements, with blocks, kicks, punches and dynamic stancework.
  • Cha Ch'uan ("Seeking Out fist"), second set in the Shao Lin Chuan series, similar to a kata, with blocks, kicks, punches and dynamic stancework.
  • Ehr Long (named after General Ehr Long), third set in the Shao Lin Chuan series, with blocks, unique "Scorpion" kicks, punches and dynamic stancework.
  • Wu Hu Dao (Five Tiger Broadsword), a beautiful, graceful weapons form using the curved single-edge sword. The form includes blocks, kicks and punches.

It is rare to find martial arts teachers who learned these traditional forms of gung fu 30 years ago, as Donald and Cheryl Lynne did at Grandmaster Kuo's studio in Chinatown, San Francisco. Both Donald and Cheryl Lynne excel at this martial art, with precision, grace and speed. Shao Lin is traditionally taught to children and young people, and at Rubbo Art of Energy students of all ages are taught this form to build strength, flexibility and fearlessness.
